Technical Estimator


The Technical Estimator role is to support and work with the sales team by technically evaluating potential opportunities, completing detailed site surveys and building proposals to meet both client and the business needs. These proposals and their technical content provide the sales team with the best opportunities to win projects. There is also a level of support required in technical aspects when the project is being developed and negotiated.

Role and responsibilities:

  • Understand the specific customer requirements and the specific project/program. 
  • Prepare, revise and issue accurate proposals, scope of works, and costings to customers, regional sales, key accounts, bidding competitions etc. 
  • Understand the key target sectors. 
  • Ensure all proposals are technically robust and support VES’ ability to make profitable business decisions without supervision. 
  • Ensure proposals of large values are reviewed by management to allow VES to be confident in pipeline.
  • Attend site to gather site specific information.
  • Liaise closely with the Projects and Operations departments to ensure projects sold run smoothly. 
  • Lead order and design reviews on new orders.
  • Maintain good working relationships with key vendors (subcontractors, suppliers, engineers etc.).
  • Act confidently to ensure clients are reassured when facing problems.
  • Obtain and review offers and quotes by subcontractors or vendors.
  • Update VES systems such as Axapta and CRM with accurate data from customers and the external sales team.
  • Liaise and support technical estimators with conducting research to obtain data on labour costs, materials, production times etc. as well as determining key variables for costs and other estimates. 
  • Build interdepartmental relationships with colleagues. 
  • Process customer orders in line with VES procedures, ensuring KPIs are achieved. 
  • Assist sales representatives with technical or pricing queries.
  • Answer incoming phone calls professionally and assist customers with any queries. 
  • Act confidently when owning and solving customer problems that occur during sales stage whilst liaising with the correct personnel in other departments.
  • Obtain and review offers and quotes by subcontractors or vendors. 
  • Maintain clear communication with clients and sales team in line with their expectations and meet any commitments given. 
  • Maintain a strong working relationship with the sales team.
  • Ensure proposals are sent out on time and are accurate.
  • Any other duties deemed appropriate by your Line Manager.
