Summary
Purpose of role
Following a major investment, we are seeking a skilled CNC Machine Operator to support the commissioning and integration of a state-of-the-art Salvagnini laser system with automated part handling in our fabrication facility. This position plays a pivotal role in programming and operating this cutting-edge equipment to ensure maximum efficiency and productivity through its automation capabilities, driving optimal output and quality performance.
Description
Roles and responsibilities
Laser Cell Operation
- Start-up, setup, and calibration of Salvagnini L4 laser (nozzle, focus, lens condition, gas selection/pressure) according to standard work.
- Programme selection and parameter checks (material grade/thickness, cutting strategy, lead-ins, micro-joints, etching/ID marks).
- Material handling: safe loading of sheets, verification of sheet numbers, certificates, and batch traceability.
- Run cutting cycles ensuring stable process conditions, correct pierce counts, edge quality, and minimal dross/burr.
- Automatic Part Picker (APP/APS) operations: monitor, adjust pick logic, sorting rules, stack maps, and destination pallets/racks; clear skeletons and ensure reliable unattended picking.
- First-off and in-process inspection against drawings, tolerances (e.g., hole/slot sizes), and cosmetic requirements; escalate deviations promptly.
- Maximise cutting efficiency and minimise wastage through nesting and Cam to meet upstream demand.
Quality & Compliance
- Adhere to ISO 9001 quality procedures and internal QMS documentation.
- Complete FAI/first-off reports, sample sign-off, and final piece-count reconciliation.
- Record and disposition non-conforming product; support root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Maintain material traceability (labels, etch marks, traveller updates, barcodes).
Maintenance & Safety
- Conduct operator-level maintenance (nozzle/lens cleaning, filter checks, coolant, chiller, beam path checks) and log activities.
- Apply LOTO and H&S procedures for interventions; maintain a clean, organised laser cell (5S).
- Handle gases (O2/N2) and consumables safely; report faults and support service visits.
Productivity & Flow
- Optimise nests and changeovers to reduce waste/time; support standardisation of setups.
- Coordinate material and WIP flow with upstream/downstream processes (press brake, deburr, stores).
- Update MES/ERP (job start/finish, scrap, downtime codes), ensure accurate labelling and packing lists.
Continuous Improvement
- Participate in kaizen, 5S audits, TPM, and SMED (quick changeover) activities.
- Provide feedback on cutting parameters, fixtures, stack maps, and sorting logic to reduce defects and improve throughput.
- Document and review Standard operating procedure and support in the ongoing training of others
Other duties
- Setting and operating of other CNC machinery
- Stock control
- Fabrication and assembly.
